Commercial Mediation Training

CEDR Accredited, 1996

Commercial Mediation Experience

Tony became a full-time CEDR Director in 2000, having previously been Dispute Resolution head for over 25 years at Bunkers, a Sussex solicitors’ firm, where he represented many private and commercial clients at mediations. Accredited by CEDR in 1996, he has become well known for mediating and developing mediation of personal injury, clinical negligence, related professional indemnity and insurance claims, in which he is widely regarded as pre-eminent. He is also noted as a mediator of holiday travel claims and of contentious costs disputes involving CFAs and ATE insurance. He also mediates disputes involving public law and judicial review, claims against the police and prison services, abuse of minors and adults with health and learning difficulties, commercial contracts, partnerships and shareholders, employment (especially workplace stress), conveyancing, landlord and tenant, banking, construction, wills and family trusts. He has designed and mediated a number of high profile group litigation claims, including the retained organs litigation. Many of his cases involve foreign parties, and he travels to mediate abroad as required. He is an experienced member of the Court of Appeal Mediation Scheme panel. Tony has featured as a leading mediator in Chambers Directory and the Legal 500 for many years, and was described as long ago as 2001 as “universally considered to be clearly the best mediator in the UK for clinical negligence and personal injury”. The 2011 Legal 500 descibes him as "a mediator of rare qualities" and "one of the go-to mediators for complex personal injury and clinical negligence disputes"; while an interviewee told Chambers 2011 that he is "a wonderful mediator, loved by clients and very personable and congenial". He trains mediators internationally and writes and lectures extensively on ADR and civil procedure. In 2010, Tony was awarded the Lord Slynn Memorial Prize for his contribution to the development of mediation in the UK.
